Dropping the S

Drew has a cute way of talking where he drops his "S". So this morning I heard this...

"I'm 'cared of the 'pider that I 'quirted with 'quirt gun."

Highlights from the Road

June 15th - Happy Father's Day to me. Spent night in Salina, KS. Wouldn't recommend the motel. Jack and Drew had the biggest grins though when we went into indoor pool.

June 16th - St. Louis at home of Chris & Valerie Hyatt. Valerie was my associate director for 4 years when I was the Campus Crusade for Christ director at the University of Northern Colorado. The boys got tons of mosquito bites and I got one under my left eye-lid. Still bothers me. I told Jack "to walk up to the little boy (V's son Jonathan) and tell him your name and ask if you can ride his toy car". So Jack walks up to his brother Drew and says "My name is Jack, can I ride your car?"

June 17th - Crossed the Mississippi (not at flood stage then where we were) and drove to KY. Spent the night in Corbin KY at a much better hotel (and Cheaper) than KS. Ate at the original Colonel Sander's restaurant. I forgot to ask if the story of rats found in chicken bucket was real.

June 18th - Made it Cornelia, GA. Along the way we made a pit stop off I-40 East of Knoxville and the "welcome Center" happened to be at the stadium for the Minor League Tennessee Smokies. Got to go into stadium and the grounds crew gave each of the boys a baseball.

June 19th - Don't remember exactly what we did but sure it involved resting and eating ice cream. Oh did chop down an old dead tree for dad and Luke & Jack later got stung by yellow jackets. I found the real story late at night. Seems Jack & Drew were putting leaving in the 'bee' hole and Luke was pulling them out.

June 20th - After playing/walking at Pits park with Grandma we drove to Mark of the Potter. The boys got to feed the trout. Laura and her brood came up later int he afternoon. After initial fear, the boys warmed up to the cousins and were sad when they left.

June 21st - the reason we drove back east/south. Mom and Dad's 50th Anniversary. big fun day with lots of relatives and friends. Fun to see my aunt & uncle and cousins who I haven't seen in 5 years. Stayed up late talking with all of Laura's family, Belinda, Mom and Dad. Kids were wired up playing with ballons and cousins.

June 22nd - Went to church at Leatherwood Baptist and then drive to Glenville, NC and began the 2nd leg of time with family. This time Robin's mom, dad, sister (Susan), nephew (Cyrus) and brother (Allan) . (Only Tucker was missing.) Laid in bed with the boys after breaking up a fight over space.

Yesterday 23rd - Helped Allan moved a pile of limbs and logs. Then we all went for a boat ride on Lake Glenville. Made it into a Pirate ship for Luke's (early ) birthday party. Complete with Jolly Roger flag and pirate gear. Swam a little with Luke and saw several water falls.

Today 24th- Found Internet connection. But my email server is down so I can't answer the 300+ emails I am certain to have. Darn!

It Seems I got a Fence for Christmas

Last Christmas when Robin asked for a wish-list, I said, "Just get me a Lowe's card". I figured in 07, I had spent enough on Lowe's and Home Depot to have part-ownership. And I didn't need anything but our house sure did. I prefer Lowe's. I know as a (from as long as I can remember) Atlanta Falcons fan, I should support Arthur Blank's business. But I value customer service and Lowe's beats Home Depot hands down on that. I once commented to a worker at Lowe's on how friendly and helpful they were and she said, "well people don't last here long if they aren't."

So I received several Lowe's cards for Christmas with generous amounts on them. (Thank you again Woody & Carolyn and Susan & Tucker.) All year I have been thinking, "its too bad I didn't ask for these a year ago because i would have used them more the first year we moved into our home." But maybe I could use them to replace the tile in our bathroom in 08. As of last month, I used some for stuff we needed like a new back porch screen door, a mattock (which has come in handy) and other random stuff I forget but still had a lot of $ left on two of them.

My next-door neighbor approached me about rebuilding the fence between our property. The old one was the original one built like in 1980 or so. One post was totally broken and the pickets were rotten. The fence just was being held up by his dog run which he wanted to remove.

So even though I was leaving in a week, we went to Lowe's last Saturday in his pickup and bought posts and fencing. I used my remaining Lowe's cards and even had to use a little on credit card. Noah bought some stuff too like cement and screws. We will settle the difference after we see what more we need to buy or return. I should get most of what I put on Credit back and therefore I got the fence for Christmas.

The fence is not up yet and I leave in less than 48 hours for 3 weeks. It took a lot of work to try to dig out the old posts because they broke and then with the old cement and all. I was about to say let's just rethink this whole thing. Finally, Noah's uncle, who also lives in our neighborhood, had a better post hole digger that did the work. But Robin & I had a cookout last Saturday night for folks from our church going with me to South Africa and then every night this week Noah has either had a softball game to go to or a bible study. Last night by flashlight we put up two posts once we he got back home.

I realize I am way too old for this mess. I'm tired. I also stepped on an old screw two nights ago that went straight through the boot I was wearing into my left foot. Fortunately I already had a Tetanus shot in prep for my trip to Africa. But I am hobbling like the patriarch Jacob.

So we sit here now on Friday about noon with one more hole to dig, we two more posts to put up, my sprinkler line to repair (DOH!), not to mention all the boards and pickets to put up and Noah wants to build a gate on his side. I'm afraid the best we can do is get the posts up tonight and Noah will have the rest to finish on his own after I leave because I need most of tomorrow to get ready.

So I will enjoy my Christmas gift when we get back on July 5th.

Two Fads in One

Today Jack went with me to get the Camry's Emission checked and then register both cars. As we were riding in Broomfield to the Emission place, I saw a new coffee shop. We used to live in Broomfield up until a year ago and I was always looking for a good coffee place so this caught my eye. Now this not just any old coffee shop, this is a combo Coffee shop/Tattoo parlor: The Smokey Banana.

As I searched the web for the Smokey Banana's site I see where it won the Westwood Denver's Best Place to get Coffee and a Tattoo. Like does it have any competition for that award? (Considering I found the pic of "Smokey Banana's sign from first position on a Google image search of 'tattoo coffee', I'd say they have cornered the market.) And from the Westwood review, it looks like that market is the biker crowd that craves skinny mocha lattes.

I wonder what other combos are potential business ventures?
Bar & Funeral Home - Robin suggested that one.
Gun Store & Donut Shop - You could call it 'Cops & Robbers'
Malt Shop & Tanning Salon - Shake & Bake
Laundromat & Bike Shop - Spin Cycle

(Maybe if any readers out there, they can suggest a few.)

ShareFest 08

Robin and I worked at the 5th Annual Boulder ShareFest this weekend. Friends of AFMWA might recall that last year at this time I had my own personal ShareFest. This year with so many Boulder area churches involved (35 at last count), some churches like ours worked for other service organizations than just the Boulder Valley School District.

Cornerstone worked for RSVP of Boulder County. RSVP is a national program, part of Senior Corps and under the same umbrella as VISTA, Peace Corps and Americorps. Actually started by Tricky Dick in the 70's. RSVP in Boulder serves Senior Citizens in county who still live at home and who might need fix-it jobs or someone to buy groceries for them etc.

I think RSVP nominated about 30 homes for our church to help with things like painting, yard work etc. We also had a few homes in the neighborhood near our church nominated through the neighborhood association and ones nominated by people in our church of people who were disabled, single moms and elderly.

Robin and I worked with 6 other people for a home in Boulder just a block off of Pearl Street. One couple we worked with - Chad & Katie - are going with me to South Africa in July. We did yard work for a lady named Meta Moldenhour. Meta is 93 years old and is currently in a nursing care with a congestive heart failure. But she still lives in this house where she has lived since 1940. Some friends from her church were taking care of it for her but they are in their 70's themselves. It had gotten out of control.

So all morning we pulled weeds, removed rocks and random metal pipes, trimmed trees, mowed and weed whacked. We finished around lunchtime and had a little picnic together on the freshly cut front lawn. Then we loaded up this truck of debris - adding into the mix 20+ cinder blocks - and then a few of us unloaded that in a dumpster at the church.

Good day fun day.

I actually am looking at volunteering for RSVP though their website says they take volunteers 55 and older.
